Lucinda Jacob is a textile artist drawn to traditional machine and hand embroidery techniques and experimentation with form and scale. In her pieces the the imagery, stitching and manipulation has frequently been suggested by the material itself (such as old leather evening gloves) or on the other hand, by simple graphic motifs.
She makes one-off decorative, sculptural and occasionally useful textile pieces using a combination of traditional and contemporary stitching and printing techniques. The processes include embroidery, bobbin-lace making, crochet, knitting, the use of found textiles and the re-use of dressmaking fabrics, printing and ‘over-dyeing’.
She was taught to sew by her two grandmothers and her mother and she has a City & Guilds Design with Craft (Embroidery) Level 3 qualification, which she completed alongside the other members of Filament. She has been a member of the IMMA Artists’ Panel and the Artists’ Panels of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and Dublin City County Council. She is a member of The Irish Embroiderer’s Guild, Feltmakers Ireland and the Irish Guild of Lacemakers. Lace pieces that she designed and made won prizes in the 2006 and 2009 RDS National Craft competitions and toured with the winners exhibitions.
She has wide ranging teaching experience, leading workshops in primary schools, with young adults with learning difficulties, teachers, other adults and older people. Typically these programmes have been facilitated through IMMA, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, VECs and the HSE. She is also a published writer of children’s books and poetry.
